Red's
Rec Room

Reds
Rec Room, featuring dining, dancing, bowling, billiards,
and games was created in eight months in 1996, and then extensively
researched for eight months in 1997. Strategic Leisure conceptualize
and led the design, developed, opened, and subsequently researched
the 107,000 square foot entertainment product at the West Edmonton
Mall with its client/partner, Brunswick
Corporation.
The rec room
is seen as a safe, social, casual venue where family and friends
shared interactive entertainment experiences. Born of a simpler
time and of warm colors and ad hoc decorating, the rec room became
the perfect design metaphor for creating the right atmosphere for
high concept home and for low concept fun on a budget. Large scale
icons (such as the TV, bowling trophy, bowling ball, and fish) were
used to send outrageous, fun messages and replace expensive design
details. A scale shift into a bigger than life environment also
helps put guests in a child-like state of mind.
Red's
Emotional Profile
Red's already exists in everybody's not-too-distant memory as the
comfortable, familiar, and fun-filled, 1960s vintage, rec room.
It's where people hung out and played pool, hide-and-seek and Twister;
made "forts;" watched Godzilla movies and Sunday afternoon
football; and, held baby showers and New Year's Eve get-togethers.
The rec room is where the your high school band practiced until
further banished to the garage.
